My Husband Died 6 Years Ago… So Who Was Living With Me?

My Husband Died 6 Years Ago… So Who Was Living With Me?

Rain tapped softly against the window glass as “Elisa Morgan” once again heard the strange sound coming from the basement.

Knock… knock… knock…

As if someone was slowly tapping their fingers against wood.

She rose from the couch and glanced at the clock hanging on the wall.

It was 2 AM.

Upstairs in the bedroom, her husband “Daniel” was sleeping peacefully… or at least, that’s what she believed.

Elisa tried to convince herself that the old house probably made strange noises. After all, the house on the outskirts of London was nearly a hundred years old. But the noises weren’t the only problem.

A lot had changed over the past few months.

Daniel’s handwriting had changed.

He always drank his coffee black, but now he added two spoons of sugar.

He used to hate cigarettes, yet lately his coat smelled like burnt tobacco.

And the strangest of all…

The basement.

A place Daniel always kept locked.

“There’s just old junk down there, nothing important,”
he would say every time with a smile.

But lately, there was something cold hidden behind that smile.

Many times, Elisa had caught him staring at her as though she were a stranger.

As if he knew her… but no longer loved her.

The next morning, while cleaning the house, Elisa found a box of old photographs in the storage room.

The photographs were half-burned.

In one picture, Daniel stood beside a woman.

The woman’s face had been burned away.

On the back of the photograph, only one sentence was written:

“You should have died.”

Elisa’s hands trembled.

At that moment, she heard footsteps behind her.

Daniel stood in the doorway.

“What are you looking for in my things?”

His voice was calm… but his eyes weren’t.

For the first time, Elisa felt afraid of her husband.

Daniel slowly walked toward her. He almost snatched the burned photograph from her hands, yet his face remained disturbingly calm.

“You shouldn’t make a habit of touching my things, Elisa.”

His tone sounded soft… but beneath that softness was unmistakable harshness.

Elisa stared at him silently for a few moments.

Suddenly, she realized Daniel had never spoken to her like this before. At least not during their six years of marriage.

This was the first time she had heard that cold, unfamiliar tone from him.

Her throat tightened. She merely nodded slightly, trying to end the conversation.

A few seconds later, Daniel’s familiar smile returned.

He stepped closer, gently tapped her cheek, then leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“Sweetie… I love you.”

But Elisa couldn’t bring herself to say it back.

Because for the first time… there was no love in those words.

Only performance.

And perhaps Daniel had already noticed the fear growing in her eyes and the shifting emotions on her face.

That night, Elisa decided she would uncover the basement’s secret

At 3 AM, after Daniel had fallen asleep, she quietly walked downstairs.

The house was completely silent.

Only the sound of rain…

And her heartbeat.

A heavy chain hung over the basement door, yet strangely, the key was already inside the lock.

As if someone wanted her to enter.

When she opened the door, a cold gust of air hit her face.

The basement was dark.

Except for a dim yellow light glowing in the corner.

Elisa stepped forward…

And her breath stopped.

Dozens of photographs covered the walls.

All of them were pictures of her.

Sleeping.

Cooking.

Bathing.

Even photos taken while she was at work.

As if someone had been watching her every second.

Then her eyes fell on a newspaper clipping.

And in that moment, her entire world turned upside down.

The headline read:

“Daniel Morgan Died in a Horrific Car Crash Eight Years Ago”

Elisa stared at the photograph with trembling hands.

It was Daniel.

The same face.

The same eyes.

But that was impossible.

Because Daniel was upstairs sleeping.

Suddenly, the basement door slammed shut behind her.

BANG.

Elisa spun around.

Daniel stood on the staircase.

Silent.

Motionless.

A knife in his hand.

“You shouldn’t have come down here…”
he said quietly.

Tears filled Elisa’s eyes.

“Who are you?”

Silence lingered for a few seconds.

Then he smiled.

“That’s a question you should ask yourself, Elisa.”

Daniel pulled a small recorder from his pocket and pressed play.

A woman’s voice echoed through the room.

It was Elisa’s own voice.

“If he finds out the truth, everything will be over… we’ll have to kill him…”

Elisa staggered backward.

“That… that’s a lie…”

But there was no fear left in Daniel’s eyes now.

Only hatred.

“Eight years ago, you tried to kill your husband. You wanted to run away with your lover and take all his money.”

Elisa’s mind went numb.

Broken memories rushed back into her head.

Rain…

A car…

Screaming…

Blood…

“No…” she whispered, collapsing onto the floor.

Daniel slowly walked toward her.

“That night, the car went off the cliff. I survived… but your lover died.”

Elisa could barely breathe.

“You… you’re Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Then what is all this?”

He laughed.

A cold, terrifying laugh.

“You remembered nothing. After the accident, you were mentally shattered. You convinced yourself that you were innocent… and that I was the monster.”

Elisa looked at the photographs on the wall.

“All this… was to scare me?”

“No…”

He crouched beside her.

“This was to remind you who the real monster is.”

Then he threw one final file in front of her.

A police report.

Real Name:
“Elisa Carter”

Crime:
Attempted murder of her first husband.
Insurance fraud with her lover.

Elisa’s hands shook violently.

Suddenly, everything came back to her.

She really had tried to kill Daniel.

And after the accident, instead of sending her to prison… Daniel kept her beside him.

For eight years.

Playing psychological games.

Slowly restoring her memory.

For one purpose only.

Revenge.

Elisa looked up in terror.

“What… what are you going to do now?”

Daniel slowly stood up.

“Murder?”

A faint smile crossed his lips.

“No, Elisa.”

At that very moment, the knife slipped from Daniel’s hand and clattered onto the floor.

Clink…

The sound echoed through the silent basement walls.

Daniel closed his eyes for a moment, as if trying to bury years of pain deep inside himself. Then he slowly began walking toward the stairs.

After taking two steps, he stopped.

He looked back at Elisa.

A faint… sorrowful smile rested on his lips.

“I’m not like you, Elisa…”

His voice was no longer cold.

It was broken.

“I loved you… truly loved you. If you had simply asked for my money once… I would have given you everything.”

Tears streamed down Elisa’s face.

Daniel’s eyes drifted somewhere far into the past.

“Do you know what my biggest mistake was?”

He let out a soft laugh filled with pain.

“I built my entire world around one woman.”

Silence.

Only the rain.

“And that woman destroyed that world with her own hands.”

Elisa broke down sobbing.

“Daniel… please…”

But he didn’t stop.

“You didn’t just destroy my trust… you destroyed my faith in love.”

He stared at her silently for several moments.

“But one thing is still true…”

he whispered softly.

“Even if it was all built on lies… we still had beautiful memories together. And maybe that’s why… I couldn’t kill you.”

Elisa sat trembling on the floor.

Daniel took a deep breath.

“You are a lesson to me, Elisa. But I can’t judge the entire world because of you…”

A faint smile crossed his face.

“Not all five fingers are the same.”

Suddenly, police sirens echoed outside.

Red and blue lights danced across the basement walls.

Daniel looked at Elisa one last time.

Then he slowly walked upstairs.

And moments later…

Only the faint sound of his humming remained.

While behind him, in the basement, Elisa was left alone with the ruins of her life, her crimes… and the echoes of her own screams.
